Herpes Simplex Prevention

Herpes simplex is an infectious disease that is very common among the American population. Therefore, herpes simplex prevention should be a priority for both individuals and institutions such as hospitals, health care providers and government agencies.

Herpes simplex prevention begins with a good understanding of the virus and its symptoms. There are two forms of the herpes simplex virus - Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 is sometimes called ‘cold sores' or ‘fever blisters' and usually manifests as sores on the face. Type 2 also manifests as sores, but they usually appear on or around the genital area.

Understanding how the virus is spread is also key to herpes simplex prevention. Type 1 is extremely easy to transmit through even the most casual contact. Kissing is one obvious way to catch it, but so is sharing a fork, a lipstick or cigarette, a drink or even a towel. Therefore, herpes simplex prevention as regards Type 1 requires taking special care not to come into contact with items that have been used by an infected person.

Type 2 is typically spread via sexual intercourse, including oral. Consequently, a condom or dental dam should be used every time sexual contact occurs in order to ensure herpes simplex prevention.

It's important to remember that Type 2 herpes simplex prevention is not guaranteed by the absence of visible sores. It is possible for a person to transmit the virus to their sexual partner without even being aware that they themselves have the disease. Thus, prompt diagnosis is also very important when it comes to Type 2 herpes simplex prevention. Anyone who notices symptoms consistent with virus, or who knows that they've come into intimate contact with some who's infected, should have themselves tested immediately.
