Mumps symptoms, What is Mumps? Mumps is a viral disease caused by the Mumps virus; though it can be easily avoided with the Mumps vaccination, usually administered at childhood because children are more susceptible to it due to under developed immune systems.
The Mumps have several common and easy to spot symptoms making this disease easy to catch and treat before it develops into lifelong and cataclysmic conditions. In the early stages of the Mumps, symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, headaches and aching around the body, and high temperature. If untreated, these symptoms will last three days to around a week and are often misconstrued as influenza. After the first round of symptoms, more will start to develop, these include the swelling of the glands under and in front of the ear.
Usually one side of the face will swell slowly and then the other side rapidly. Swelling may last at least a week and may go on as long as 11 days. The consumption of acidic foods or drinks cause much discomfort and the resurgence of the first round of symptoms. Other symptoms that may occurring during either stage include testicular pain in males, abdominal pain usually feeling like cramps, seizures, stiffness of upper body muscles, most commonly the neck, and difficulty swallowing. For males, the most painful symptom is called Orchitis which is severe pain in the testicles and can affect one testicle or both. The first stage of symptoms will usually recur during the second stage, though they can be treated speratly to make it more bearable. The use of painkillers is the most common treatment for Mumps as the infected usually try and wait out the few weeks that mumps is present.
The Mumps are extremely painful and will eventually go away, though without treatment, it can be a nearly impossible experience.
