Poliomyelitis Symptoms

What is Poliomyelitis? About ninety percent of Polio victims experience almost no symptoms at all, those that do experience a large range of symptoms.

Poliomyelitis Symptoms

When an infected individual experiences Poliomyelitis, the symptoms materialize only rarely. However, many diverse symptoms are present including fever, headache, general discomfort or uneasiness, red throat, usually causing sore and dry coughs, vomiting, in some cases, blood. After 72 hours of being infected with Poliomyelitis, infected individuals may also experience back pain or back ache, diarrhea, excessive tiredness or fatigue, usually causing one to be incapacitated for hours, irritability, leg pain, normally in the calf muscles, moderate fever, muscle stiffness, muscle tenderness and spasm all around the body, neck pain and stiffness, vomiting, sometimes blood, skin rash, pain in front of neck, and heavy diarrhea, usually containing blood.

In may extreme cases, the symptoms can be much more deadly and harmful to the infected. Also, the more severe symptoms tend to be more permanent or long lasting. Some of these include abnormal sensations around the body, bloated feeling in abdomen usually resulting in the loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, constipation, difficulty beginning to urinate, unconscious drooling, fever, usually starting a week before any other symptoms, poor temper control, muscle contractions, muscle weakness usually resulting in paralysis or spinal cord damage, sensitivity to touch and difficulty swallowing.
Though the latter set of symptoms is rare, they still may follow the earlier signs of Poliomyelitis. More typically, Poliomyelitis occurs in men, though it has been known to affect women nearly as much. Though most cases of Poliomyelitis are temporary, the more severe cases can last years.
