Tick-borne Meningoencephalitis Prevention

What is Tick-borne meningoencephalitis?

Tick-borne meningoencephalitis is a virus-born infection that can do severe damage to the central nervous system as well as the membrane that protects the brain as well as the spinal cord. In some cases it can contaminate the spinal fluid and may cause short to long term paralysis. Because of its debilitating nature, it is a well feared disease, though there are some simple measures that can prevent against it.

How can I prevent Tick-borne meningoencephalitis?

The prevention of this disease can be rather simple. As its name suggests, it is a disease trasfered by being bitten by an infected tick. Thus, an easy way to prevent contracting this particular debilitating disease is simply to wear bug repellant when traveling in wooded areas, or simply not traveling to wooded areas. Another measure that one might take to prevent Tick-borne meningoencephalitis is only drinking store purchased and processed dairy products. Because cow milk can be infected by a cow being bitten by an infected tick, it is advisable to not drink home milked cow milk. Though cows do not suffer from Tick-borne meningoencephalitis, it can infect their milk, however, milk processing kills these bacteria that form into a virus. Simply purchasing store milk can protect greatly against Tick-borne meningoencephalitis.

Another measure that can be taken is to receive the vaccination for Tick-borne meningoencephalitis. However, this vaccination is rare and expensive because its ingredients take money and time to farm, so it is usually reserved for military personal that are active in wooded areas, foresters, and rangers.

There is also a booster shot that can be obtained for less money and less waiting, however, this booster only can fight the disease for so long. If prolonged or multiple bites from an infected tick occur, the booster may prove useless.
